The UP Manila elections have always been the battle of ideologies and creeds. This is actually healthy, considering that the votes all the candidates have been clashing for are the critical votes of the Iskolars ng Bayan, whose rights and welfare have always been compromised in the course of the university’s history. And since the battle for the Iskolars’ votes is a battle for the students’ rights and representation, safeguarding a clean election is hereby affirmed to be necessary.
Early in its campaigns, a certain party has been very vocal in its desire for a clean election, both literally and figuratively. However, members of the same party ironically initiated the pathetic mudslinging and black propaganda, owing to its desperate desire to win the Iskolars’ favor and sympathy. This time, party politics was reduced to petty yet personal attacks on the individual.

STOP THE POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF ACTIVISTS!
Reynante Gamara, campaign officer of Bayan Muna partylist and father of UP Manila Development Studies major Niki Gamara, was arrested and detained by PNP-CIDG and AFP operatives on Tuesday on trump up charges of murder which allegedly happened in Quezon province. He was also presented by the military as a ‘ranking officer of the Communist party in Metro Manila’.
This is a clear case of political harassment against Bayan Muna and other progressive partylist groups and organizations that are critical of the Aquino government and the AFP’s dismal human rights record.
His daughter Niki, who is the current Secretary General of ANAKBAYAN UP Manila, reportedly continues to receive threats after her father’s arrest.
ASAP-Katipunan condemns the political persecution of activists and harassment of their families. We also join Bayan Muna and other progressive organizations in the call for the immediate release of Reynante Gamara and all political prisoners.
